What I Read In 2017//A Complete List

Happy New Years!

It’s 2018! Which means a whole new year of reading! And a whole new reading goal!

This year my goal was between 50 and 75 books. I was just getting back into reading after 4 years at school having to focus on my classes and assigned reading so I wanted to start it low. I hit 57 books! Next year I would like to read 75-100 books! Even more if i manage it but I get book hang overs after i read a good book so I tend to mellow for a couple days before devouring my next book.

Most of them are YA novels. All of those save for one or two are YA fantasy/paranormal as I am not much of a contemporary reader. A mix of some old series, some new series, a couple of stand-alones and some rereads. There are a couple of Adult romance books mixed in.

So let’s get into the list!

1-3: The Ghost and the Goth Series! ghostandthegoth

Really cute YA Paranormal fantasy. it is about a popular high school girl who has been hiding the struggles of her real life and when she dies, she realizes that the only one who can see her is the cute “goth” boy who tries to start noticed and get through the day without anyone (dead or alive) realizing he can see ghosts. The pair form a unique friendship as they try to help each other with their issues. Slight romance but very light and natural in my opinion. More about friendship, mourning, and personal development. The title made me thing it was going to be kind of cliche and shallow but it wasn’t at all. Worth checking out!

  • The Ghost and the Goth by Stacey Kade
  • Queen of the Dead by Stacey Kade
  • Body & Soul by Stacey Kade

4-5: The Red Queen Series by Victoria Aveyard. victoriaaveyard

I feel like I was late to the game on this series. I read the first 2 books in the series this year and just received the second book for christmas. Honestly, I enjoyed the first book, wasn’t much for the second but am invested enough to continue with the third. After I read the 3rd book, I plan to write a full review of my thoughts before the last book comes out. If you don’t know, Red Queen is a YA fantasy dystopian about a world divided into Normal “Red bloods” who are essentially the slave class and the “Silver bloods” who have powers and make up the ruling class. Mare the main character gets stuck in-between them when it turns out she is a red blood with powers, something that is unheard of and believed to be impossible.

  • Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard
  • Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

6-7: The Library Jumpers Series

51pgpmwc2rl-_ac_ul320_sr214320_guardian-of-secrets-brenda-drake

The Library Jumpers is a YA Fantasy series. As a huge lover of libraries I had to buy it. It is about a group of warriors who can jump between libraries to protect the human world from creatures trying to use the doorways in libraries to get in from their worlds and wreak havoc. The third book comes out February 6th and I am excited to find out what happens next!

  • Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake
  • Guardian of Secrets by Brenda Drake

8-10: The Iron Witch series

tiw-uk-cover51wvyurf8cl-_ac_ul320_sr208320_51rq1hrqfdl-_ac_ul320_sr208320_

I am a sucker for a good fairy series! The Iron Witch isn’t your typical fairy series. It is mostly about a group of Alchemists. The Main character is a girl whose parents died when she was very young leaving her in the custody of this secret alchemist group. She befriends a guy who is part fairy and they work together to figure out what the group is up to and find out there is much more happening than they thought and there is more at stake that they are now caught in the middle of.

  • The Iron Witch by Karen Mahoney
  • The Wood Queen by Karen Mahoney
  • The Demon King by Karen Mahoney

11: Dreamers Often Lie by  Jacqueline West dreamers-often-lie-cover

Dreamers often Lie is the only contemporary book I read this year. Not Sorry. It was actually really good! Maybe because it also had a kind of fantasy element. The book is about Jaye a High School Theater enthusiast who wakes from an accident seeing and hearing Shakespeare characters invading her everyday life. the book is about her trying to maintain her sanity and figure out whats real and whats not. I am not familiar with shakespeare aside from general knowledge of a couple of plays, I’ve honestly never read any of his work but I didn’t find the book hard to keep up with. The main character made a lot more stupid mistakes than I am comfortable with but that is one of the reasons I don’t read YA contemporary books. I think what set this one apart and let me still enjoy it was the dreamy element of the book.

12-14: The Frost series by Kailin Gow

51wlz4qt8jl-_ac_ul320_sr214320_

8069816

The Frost series is a very long series. With 8 books, I only finished 3 before I started to lose interest. i can deal with long series, In fact I love them but this one started to feel a little thrown together for me. I might give it another shot in the future but as of now, I don’t have immediate plans to continue book 4-8. The series is about Breena who has been dreaming about fairies all her life and one day a handsome fairy she painted shows up and whisks her away to the Feyland. But only because, he wants her dead.

  • Bitter Frost by Kialin Gow
  • Forever Frost by Kailin Gow
  • Silver Frost by Kailin Gow

15: A Beautiful Dark series by Jocelyn Davies 10429025

A Beautiful Dark is a YA Paranormal series about angels. I enjoyed the first book but I got distracted after starting the second book and never read the rest of the series. I think it was your typical YA angel romance book. Good angels vs. Bad angels. A cliche love triangle (I love those) and even a jealous Angel ex! I might go back to this series eventually. But guessing from the fact I’d rather read some of my favorite YA angel series (Fallen & Hush, Hush) It doesn’t look too good for it.

16. Wintersong by S. Jae Jones 51b3sa1ldll-_sx329_bo1204203200_

Wintersong is the first book by this author and let me tell you, SHE NAILED IT! It is a YA Fantasy that has been compared to the Labyrinth. Set in 18th century Bavaria, the book is about the musical Leisl who is lured into the underground world by the Goblin king she can’t remember growing up playing with but remembers her grandmothers stories about how he lures brides down into his world. To save her sister she agrees to be his bride and help maintain the barrier between his world that stops her world from being plunged into eternal winter. But she eventually starts to feel like a trapped songbird and had to decided if its worth it being trapped, never to see her family again with the Goblin king. The second book comes out February 6th and I cannot wait!

17. The Book Jumpers by Glaser Mechthild 30532463

The Book Jumpers is a YA Fantasy about 2 rival families with the power to jump into the pages of books to maintain order. Amy is just finding out about this power as her mother has been hiding it from her and keeping her away from the Island her family is from her entire life. It is when they return there that she is introduced to this new life and learned to jump into books. When characters and important plot ideas start disappearing from the books, she must team up with the other book jumpers from the rival family to figure out whats going on inside the books before they are permanently altered.

18-23: Mythos Academy series by Jennifer Estep  mythosacademy

The Mythos Academy series is a YA Fantasy series about mythology. Mythos Academy is one of the many schools around the world for warriors descended from Greek Myths. Technically there are warriors from the mythology of many different cultures at the schools but they aren’t mentioned as Greek Mythology is the main focus. I absolutely love this series. One flaw: The main character Gwen is a “Gypsy” not necessarily a Romani, but a fictional version of the “Gypsy stereotype” where her family are descended from a Gypsy who is a secret hero in greek mythology. Hard to explain. The book is an older book from 2011 which before many people  were educated on the fact Gypsy is a slur for the Romani people and it being racist and very rude to say. This is something that most people still struggle with understanding but as Gwen and her family are portrayed as only kind and generous people willing to sacrifice themselves for those they love and the protection of humanity, Im completely confident she was unfortunately ignorant of the negative connotations and made no ill will. If that is something you are willing to forgive and the use of the word won’t grate on you throughout this series, I DEFINITELY would add this to you tbr. Step recently started a spin off series focusing on a different set of characters that I am anxious to pick up.

  • Touch of Frost by Jennifer Estep
  • Kiss of Frost by Jennifer Estep
  • Dark Frost by Jennifer Estep
  • Crimson Frost by Jennifer Estep
  • Midnight Frost by Jennifer Estep
  • Killer Frost by Jennifer Estep

24-25: The Otherworld series by Skylar Dorsetdd7e54b22ec64e5afffe6bfe9ec98cdb6473030751auyxsfv4l

The Otherworld series is about a YA Fantasy series about fairies. It has a very Alice in Wonderland vibe to me which I loved. Kind of chaotic in the way a fairy book should be. I felt like it could have ended better and there could have been another book or two to complete the series but I still enjoyed it.

  • The Girl Who Never Was by Skylar Dorset
  • The Boy with the Hidden Name by Skylar Dorset

26: The Thousandth Floor by Katherine McGee 24921954-_uy925_ss925_

The Thousandth Floor is a YA Science Fiction with a more contemporary feel. Think Gossip Girl but in the future. Set in 2118, the city of New York and many other big cities around the world are in towers. A whole city in a giant tower and the richer you are, the higher in the tower you live. The book follows the lives of a bunch of upper class teenagers in New York as their lives all lead them towards a terrifying event. The sequel recently came out with a third on the way.

27: The False Princess by Ellis O’Neal 51ttzzsme2bl-_sx322_bo1204203200_

Mentioned in my Top 5 stand alone reads of 2017. The False Princess is a YA Fantasy book about Nalia who after spending 16 years raised in the castle, finds out she isn’t actually the princess, rather an orphan who was disguised as the real princess at birth to avoid the prophecy from coming true. The Prophecy claiming the princess would die before her 16th birthday. After finding out her whole life is a lie, she is kicked out to live with a relative who doesn’t know her and figure out who she really is. But the real princess might not be out of danger quite yet.

28-30: The Splintered series by A.G. Howard 6852601

The Splintered series is a YA Romance set in the world of Alice in Wonderland. Rather than a retelling, its more like a sequel set in a twisted version of Wonderland. Alyssa and her mother are descended from the original Alice Liddel and every female from her line including Alyssa and her mother are cursed to hear plants and bugs talk. Alyssa’s mother is currently locked in a mental hospital because of the curse and Alyssa has been keeping it a secret to avoid landing in the same place. Then she finds out that the curse is breakable if she just goes back to wonderland and fixes all the mistakes that Alice made. But this wonderland is darker than the stories and she has to fight to survive with the help of her Human Crush Jeb and Morpheus her dashing yet conniving wonderland guide who serves as this version’s Mad Hatter. There is so much more to this series than I can say without ruining it BUT it is so worth it.

  • Splintered by A.G. Howard
  • Unhinged by A.G. Howard
  • Ensnared by A.G. Howard

31-35: Shadow Falls series by C.C. Hunter booksoftheshadowfallsseries

Shadow Fall is the kind of series I would have been ALL about in 2012 and turns out, I was still all about it in 2017. A summer camps full of teenage supernaturals. YES PLEASE. I remember seeing these books on the shelves for years and never picked them up but they are actually really good. Unlike many other YA supernatural books from that era (2008ish-2012ish) the focus isn’t mainly on romance. There is more of a focus on self discovery, building solid and supportive friendships, and finding a tight knit family of sorts even when your own have failed you. Yes, there is a kind of love triangle but the way it ends is even much to be admired. With a lot of respect and dignity. Trust me. It is a good series to devour.

  • Born at Midnight by C.C. Hunter
  • Awake at Dawn by C.C. Hunter
  • Taken at Dawn by. C.C. Hunter
  • Whispers at Moonrise by C.C. Hunter
  • Chosen at Night Fall by C.C. Hunter

36-38: World Walkers series by Josephine Angelini worldwalker-e1441359935156

OMG. I don’t have the words for this series. I don’t remember how I found it but it was a TRIP. Lily is allergic to practically life itself. Until a version of herself drags her into an alternative version of her world. Set in an alternative version of Salem, in a world run by witches, Lily finds out this version of herself is the Queen witch of Salem. And kind of evil. Lily ends up outside of the city in the hands of some of her alternative self’s enemies and must learn to survive and find her way back home.

  • Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini
  • Fire Walker by Josephine Angelini
  • Witch’s Pyre by Joesphine Angelini

39: The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco test

The Bone witch is a YA Fantasy. Unlike the other witches in her family, Tea is a necromancer. A feared form of magic that allows her to raise the dead. She accidentally raises her dead brother from the dead at his funeral and a mysterious witch comes to take her as her apprentice. Told from the perspective of future Tea, she recounts her journey of becoming an “Asha” which is kind of like a magical Geisha and how it led her to where she currently is. It is part of a series with the second book coming out March 20th.

40: Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor 29748925

Strange the Dreamer is a YA Fantasy. Lazlo is an orphan and a junior librarian who has spent his whole life dreaming about the lost city of Weep whose true name disappeared hundreds of years ago and is now just a myth. Then when he finally has the opportunity to find out all of Weep’s secrets he jumps at the chance. But Weep is not exactly what he’s been dreaming of. The sequel is set to come out something in 2018.

41: How to Hang a Witch by Adriana Mather 514ry2bnizsl-_sy344_bo1204203200_

How to Hang a Witch is a YA Paranormal Fantasy. Samantha and her stepmother have recently moved to Salem, where she finds out she is descended from the infamous Cotton Mathers of THE Witch trials. Immediately she is hated by a group of Mean Girls self titled “The Descendants” that are descended of witches. Samantha wants nothing to do with them, but when she finds out all of them are cursed to keep losing members of their family early, she must work with them to discover how to break the curse. Did I mention, there is a handsome ghost floating around Samantha’s house who helps her break the curse? Also a cute neighbor boy with a sweet mom who loves to bake and grow witchy herbs? Oh yeah, Its got all the good stuff. Upon looking it up again before writing this I found out there is a sequel that came out in October! *aaaand bought!*

42: Hunted by Meaghan Spooner 30653719

As I am writing this, i am watching the live action remake of Beauty and the Beast. Appropriate as Hunted is a YA retelling of the story. But with a twist, mainly being that Beauty is kind of a bad ass. This beauty (named Yeva)  loves to hunt and her current target is the beast. Believing he is to blame for her fathers death, she aims to kill him. The Beast needs a hunter to help him break his curse, and though not his first choice, Yeva will have to do. If only he can get her to stop trying to kill him long enough to learn what he must teach her.

43-44: Fallen Series by Lauren Kate (Reread) bl

This series is an old favorite of mine that i’ve wanted to reread. I never got to the fourth book because I hate waiting for books to come out, I always forget about them. So years later, I have decided to start rereading them so I can finally finish the series. Fallen is a YA Fantasy series about Angels. Lucinda is shipped off to a boarding school for troubled teens after he ex-boyfriend mysteriously dies and she is blamed. While there she meets Daniel, a fallen angel who it turns out she has been falling involve with and losing over and over again for centuries. Lucinda and Daniel must explore all of Lucinda’s past lives to figure out what is different this time and how they can finally move forward together. All while there is a great war going on around them between the different groups of angels.

  • Fallen by Lauren Kate
  • Torment by Lauren Kate

45: A Demon and his Witch by Eve Langlais a-demon-and-his-witch-web-size

This book is an adult romance book that is part of a larger series with different characters each time.I got it on amazon and it was cute light read. haha. Centuries ago, Ysabel sold her soul to the devil for the opportunity to drag down everyone who was involved with burning her for being a witch, to hell with her. Right at the end of her time serving as the Lucifer’s personal assistant, 5 of those souls escape back into the human world breaking her contract. Until she finds and returns those should back to Hell, she will relive her death every day and be unable to finally own her own soul. To assist her with this task, Lucifer pairs her with half demon soldier Remy. Known to be a ladies man, Remy can’t imagine any fun in his new assignment with Ysabel who has zero interest in men after her ex-boyfriend was the one who let his mother burn her at the stake in the first place. The two make an unlikely pair and possibly an amazing couple? Just like Lucifer planned!

46: The Vampire’s Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter 51j5vi6aryl

Another adult romance book I bought off amazon. It is also part of a larger series with different characters each time. After Delaney witnesses her boss in the middle of a mob hit, she runs away to the town of Nocturne falls where she takes the identity of a mystery mail order bride. When she meets her match, it doesn’t take long to find out he is actually a vampire and what she didn’t know was the dating service was for supernatural creatures. Hugh only signed up for the matchmaking service happy to make his benefactor grandmother happy, So when he actually starts having feelings for Delaney, he is caught by surprise. Delaney has to decide what is scarier, staying in the home of a Vampire or being caught by the mob but maybe it’s not such a hard decision after all?

47: Saved by the Dragon (Loved by the Dragon) by Vivienne Savage 32067545-_uy200_

Gonna be honest. I was just really curious about a romance between a human and a dragon. Don’t worry, he can become a very Handsome human male at will. Chloe stupidly decides to climb a mountain by herself without checking the weather first. While seeking shelter in a cave, she is saved by a random Gentleman who takes care of her wound and cooks her dinner. When she finds out he is a dragon, she runs away in fear. Weeks later, she can’t seem to get him out of her head. When she finds out he actually owns a business in the human world, she goes to find him and apologize and gets sucked into the world of a billionaire dragon. I…didn’t really like this book. I don’t think it was horrible. But definitely not to my taste. haha. Cheap romance and dragons aren’t my taste.

48-51: Masters of the Mountain/Dark Haven series by Cherise Sinclair (Covers aren’t appropriate.)

Another adult romance series. Again with different characters each time but all the characters make appearances in the different books as friends and such. This series is set in a club and in a mountain resort. Not for the faint of heart and definitely not everyone’s cup of tea.

  • Master of the Mountain by Cherise Sinclair
  • Simon Says: Mine by Cherise Sinclair
  • My Liege of Dark Haven by Cherise Sinclair
  • Edge of the Enforcer by Cherise Sinclair

1524759848

52: Bonfire by Krysten Ritter

Bonfire is an adult mystery book written by the well known actor from Marvel’s Jessica Jones and the Defenders, Krysten Ritter. I wrote a whole review about this book you can read HERE.

53-54: Hush, Hush series by Becca Fitzpatrick(Reread) hushhush

Another Reread! Again with Fallen Angels! This series has been compared to Twilight but  I think it is better written and with a better plot. There is actual action and mystery and possible peril. Not just all  shallow romance and love triangles. Nora lives alone with her mother on the outskirts of town after her fathers mysterious death. Trying to make the best of her life when she meets Patch, the secretive and smug boy in her class. He just keeps showing up everywhere and she isn’t really sure whether she should trust him at all but when someone keeps trying to kill her and he keeps showing up to save her, she just might have to. Patch is a fallen angel, kicked out of heaven after falling for a human woman centuries ago, all he wants is to be human instead of this unfeeling in-between state. And Nora might be the answer to that. But gradually business starts mixing with pleasure and he isn’t sure he will be able to make the tough decisions when he has to.

  • Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
  • Crescendo by Becca Fitzpatrick

55: Caraval by Stephanie Garber 27883214

Caraval may or may not have destroyed my world for a couple of days. Caraval is a Ya Fantasy. I wrote a whole review on the book HERE.

56: This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada 33876440

This Mortal Coil is YA Science Fiction/Dystopian set in the future where changing your appearance is only one DNA enhancing app away. 2 years after a giant virus left the world either hiding away in bunkers or slowly dying on the surface, Catarina lives alone in a cabin after her Father, a genius geneticist is kidnapped by the Cartaxus organization.  Now standing on her doorstep is a Cartaxus soldier claiming her father sent him to protect her while she follows last wishes to save the human race.

57: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab 51f0kzlzb-l-_sx330_bo1204203200_

A Darker Shade of Magic is a YA Fantasy. There are Four different versions of London. Red London which is full of magic, Grey London which has no magic anymore, White London which is at war for power and slowly losing its magic, and Black London which was corrupted and destroyed by the magic left uncheck and isn’t spoken of anymore. The Londons use to be open to each other for those with magic to travel between but after what happened to Black London, they closed themselves off to protect against the corruption spreading. Well is from Red London and delivers messages from it’s kingdom to White and Grey London. He also smuggles items between the worlds on the side, until he is set up and puts all the London’s at risk. With the help of Delilah Bard, a thief and wannabe pirate from Grey London, he must race back through the Londons to set things right. Before the Magic overwhelms him.

Oh that’s too funny. I usually pick a side and if it doesn’t work out between them then it doesn’t end well for me lol! See I’m not a fan of Arik *covers face*. The ending to the first book had me obsessed with Bastien and then after the sacrifice part in Guardian of Secrets I was a goner. But I hope that you get to see Arik get a hea somehow *fingers crossed*!
