Title: A Darker Shade of Magic

Series: Shades of Magic

Author: V.E.Schwab

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy

Release Date: February 24th, 2015

My Rating: 5/5

My Description:

A Darker Shade of Magic is a YA Fantasy. There are Four different versions of London. Red London which is full of magic, Grey London which has no magic anymore, White London which is at war for power and slowly losing its magic, and Black London which was corrupted and destroyed by the magic left uncheck and isn’t spoken of anymore. The Londons use to be open to each other for those with magic to travel between but after what happened to Black London, they closed themselves off to protect against the corruption spreading. Kell is from Red London and delivers messages from it’s kingdom to White and Grey London. He also smuggles items between the worlds on the side, until he is set up and puts all the London’s at risk. With the help of Delilah Bard, a thief and wannabe pirate from Grey London, he must race back through the Londons to set things right. Before the Magic overwhelms him.

Goodreads Description:

Kell is one of the last Antari—magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once upon a time, Black.

Kell was raised in Arnes—Red London—and officially serves the Maresh Empire as an ambassador, traveling between the frequent bloody regime changes in White London and the court of George III in the dullest of Londons, the one without any magic left to see.

Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences, which Kell is now seeing firsthand.

After an exchange goes awry, Kell escapes to Grey London and runs into Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She first robs him, then saves him from a deadly enemy, and finally forces Kell to spirit her to another world for a proper adventure.

Now perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, they’ll first need to stay alive.

Like it? Love it? Hate it?

I Loved it! I had been hearing about this series from booktube and the book community for a while. I was late to the game and I was not disappointed. I found this book perfect, to be honest. The characters and how they related to each other. The world building and the plot. Everything was so good!

Critiques? Disappointments?

I didn’t like Prince Rhy. But I feel like we didn’t get that much of an impression of him. Most scenes he was in he was acting kind of spoiled and immature. Hopefully he is more included in the story in the second book and gives me a better impression.

Conclusion: This was an amazing book filled with adventure and magic. With amazing characters and villains.

Should you read it? YES. JUST YES. If you love Fantasy Adventure with minimal romance (though personally I hope for more in the next book). I HIGHLY Suggest this book.
